Skrining Thalassemia... Bagaimana Ceritanya?

Suami saya lucu. Dia kayak gak mau terima kenyataan kalau dia juga adalah thaler minor. Katanya dia tidak pernah dengar akan penyakit itu dan keluarga -nya tidak ada yang menghidapnya. Sedangkan Dr.Lim Lei Jun sudah menduga dari full blood count suami saya yang kelihatan aneh itu,kalau suami saya juga adalah thaler minor.  

Oke...kita jangan berentam dulu,mas! Maka saya pujuk dia jalani skrining di Pathlab, Kajang di Malaysia. Ngambil darah cuman sebentar dan kami jalan-jalan ke Parkson Metro Kajang setelah itu.  Skrining itu cuman RM120.00 dan mengambil masa kira-kira 4 hari untuk mengetahui keputusan-nya. 

Naah...jelas toh! "Findings are consistent with Beta-Thalassemia Trait". Bahasanya lembut banget khan...haha. 

Kerana sudah confirm suami saya itu beta-thaler minor, jadi dia pasrah saya tarik dia ke Sunway Med untuk menjalani genotyping tes bagi mengetahui loci mutasi gen beliau itu. Saya check di Pathlab dan Gribbles, di Sunway Med adalah paling murah iaitu RM1.078,00 (gulp!). Keputusan nya juga cepat cuman satu minggu (kerana di-push oleh dokter hehe).  Dari situ langsung bisa tau juga apakah kita alpha-thalessemia minor. Harus hati-hati kadang orang cuman skrin beta-thaler minor dan tidak sadar kalau dia juga alpha-thaler minor. Ada kasus dimana suami nya alpha thaler minor dan isteriya beta-thaler minor, kerana mereka pikir tipe nya gak sama maka mereka menyangka  tidak mungkin anaknya kena beta-thaler major. Ternyata anak nya kena beta-thaler major! Ini dikarenakan rupa-rupanya papa nya adalah alpha-thaler DAN beta-thaler minor. Sedih..

Kalau saya, saya memang sudah tahu kalau saya itu beta-thalassemia minor. Tinggal harus di ketahui loci lewat genotyping tes-nya. Untuk menjalani proses PGD, kita harus tahu loci mutasi genetik itu bagi membolehkan PGD scientist membuat peta DNA calon bayi kami. 

Setelah suami saya menerima kenyataan yang dia itu beta-thaler minor, maka dia declare yang dia itu pasukan "Teletubies". Bergabung dengan saya, adik perempuan saya dan ponakan kami...(haha lucu kan suami saya tuh).

 Anyway, saya tu melalui pengalaman yang menyenangkan berobat di Sunway Medical Center. Suster, dokter dan semua pegawainya profesional banget. Turun di lobby rumah sakit nya ada yang buka-kan pintu mobil lho. Keren kayak hotel. Lobby-nya malah ada piano. Paling saya suka karipap di Kampung Kravers. Kalau di Malaysia, inti karipapnya itu bukan kayak inti pastel. Inti karipap bisa ayam, kentang atau sardin. Nyummy!



(My husband is funny, he does not want to accept if he is also a beta-thalassemia minor (carrier). He said he never heard of that disease and none of his family ever suffer from it. Wherelse,Dr. Lim Lei Jun was suspecting he is one from his full blood count result which looks weird. So, I dont want to quarel with him. I entice him to agree to go for a quick screening at Pathlab in Kajang, Malaysia. It was brief and quick then we proceed to Parkson Metro Kajang after that. The cost is RM120 and it took only 4 days for the result.)After my husband accept that he is one, he has no choice but to agree with me to Sunway Med for the genotyping test in order to know the loci of the mutation. Compared to Pathlab and Gribbles, Sunway Med is the cheapest and the fastest. Our doctor was able to push the result within 1-week. From there we are able to know if we are alpha-thalassemia carrier too. Sometimes, people missed the fact that they could be a carrier of both alpha and beta-thalassemia! There was a case where the husband is alpha thalassemia minor and the wife is beta-thalassemia minor. Since its not of the same type, they thought their child will be safe from the chance to become thalassemia  major. Unfortunately the child turns to be a beta-thalassemia major! This is because, the father is both alpha-thalassemia  AND beta-thalassemia minor. sob..sob)

For myself, I already knew that I am a beta-thalassemia minor. What left now, I must know the loci. In order to undergo PGD, we must know the loci of the mutation so that the PGD scientist is able to map the DNA for our future child. 

After my husband is able to accept that he is a beta-thalassemia minor, then he declare himself as the "Teletubies" team. Joining me, my sister and our niece... (funny guy).

Anyway, I had a good experience undergoing the treatment in Sunway Medical Center. The nurses, doctor and their staff are very professional.  Infact, once you reach the lobby there will be some one who will opens your car door.. Cool, its like in a hotel. The lobby is also nice and there is a piano there. What I like the most is Kampong Kravers Currypuff. Unlike pastel, the fillings could be potato, meat or chicken. Nyummy!)
